Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Gradually combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until smooth, then stir in hot coffee.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans, smooth tops, and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Melt semisweet chocolate and let it cool. Beat butter until smooth, then add sifted powdered sugar and mix well.
  8. Incorporate cooled chocolate and sour cream to the frosting mixture until velvety.
  9. Frost one cake layer, place the second layer on top and cover the top and sides with frosting.
  10. Optionally apply a crumb coat, chill briefly and then add a final layer of frosting for presentation.
