Ingredients
  

For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 pound Ground Beef use lean for less grease
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage substitute with turkey sausage for lighter version
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes fresh, canned, or homemade
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste no substitutions needed
  • 1 chopped Yellow Onion can use white or sweet onion
  • 3 cloves Garlic fresh is recommended
  • to taste teaspoon Salt
  • to taste teaspoon Black Pepper freshly ground preferred
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar can omit if preferred
For the Cheese Layer
  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese whole milk ricotta is best
  • 1 large Egg no substitutes for binding
  • 1/4 cup Parsley can substitute with basil or oregano
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese can swap for Pecorino Romano
For Layering
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese fresh preferred for melting
  • 12 ounces Lasagna Noodles oven-ready or boiled
Optional Add-Ins
  • to taste Fresh Basil dried basil can be a substitute
  • to taste Mushrooms or Spinach add sautéed for additional flavor

Method
 

Cooking Steps
  1. In a large pot over medium heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage for 7-10 minutes until cooked through.
  2. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot and sauté for 5-7 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Simmer for 30-40 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, Parmesan cheese, and salt until smooth.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking dish.
  6. Layer the lasagna by adding a thin layer of meat sauce, followed by noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with noodles and sauce.
  8. Top with mozzarella cheese, cover with foil, and bake for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
